Competing on Authority – An Internet Marketing Strategy that Works

I’ve been doing a lot of reading on different marketing strategies and one that keeps popping up as probably the best long term internet marketing strategy is the cultivation of authority in your niche. I say long term because, let’s face it, there are a lot of things you can do to generate traffic and make money with your internet business in the short term.

However, if you are in it for the long haul, and especially if you are looking to generate a stream of passive income, then you need an internet marketing strategy that will pull in the leads whether you are working your business or on vacation in Maui. The best way to that level of business success is to prove yourself to be an expert in your niche.

What is Authority Marketing?

Authority Marketing is the process of convincing other people that you are one of the leading authorities in your field of business and then leveraging that authority to generate a steady stream of clients and income. This internet marketing strategy is not new. In fact, it has been the business strategy of choice for the top names in every industry since the dawn of commercialism.

When you think about it, who do you turn to when you need help solving problem? Whose advice are you most likely to trust? When you want the best product or service, what’s the first name that pops in your mind? Generally, it’s going to be a person or a company that has proven themselves to be knowledgeable about the subject at hand and who can provide effective solutions to your problems.

The Benefits of Authority Marketing

Using Authority Marketing as an internet marketing strategy offers several benefits. The primary benefit is that you will begin attracting clients like crazy. Instead of having to chase customers down and club them over the head with your sales message like some digital caveman, the reputation you have built for yourself will cause them to seek you out. It will also be far easier to convince people to buy from you because people innately trust those they feel are leaders and experts.

Another benefit to building a reputation for yourself as an expert is that it will be much easier for you to obtain collaboration from other people in your industry. In fact, as anyone with a popular blog will tell you, your email inbox will be filled with requests from people wanting to partner with you on joint ventures. This is because they want to capitalize on your reputation as well as reach your followers. It will be easier to launch your products and you will be provided with opportunities to make money from the efforts of others when you are perceived as an expert.

The Disadvantages to Authority Marketing

While the benefits of authority marketing are numerous there are also many disadvantages to pursuing this internet marketing strategy. You open yourself up to more criticism. There will be many people who will be jealous of your success and will take every opportunity they can to pick at you. You need to have a thick skin otherwise you will be chased off the internet.

For good or bad, people will follow your lead. I think many individuals in positions of authority forget that people are looking to them for cues on the right way to behave so that they can achieve the same level of success. It will be important that you remember this and lead your followers in a positive direction.

How to Build Authority

You already have the expert level knowledge needed to help people with their problems. In order to use Authority Marketing as an effective internet marketing strategy, you have to convince your target market you are an expert they can trust to help them. You do this by demonstrating you do know what you are talking about and that you can come up with effective solutions to the problems faced by the people in your target market. Some common ways you can achieve this goal include:

* Starting a blog and writing articles about topics important to your customers. This includes providing solutions to common problems.

* Write articles and submit them to article directories, blogs, and ezine newsletters that cater to people who need your products or services.

* Define your target market and network with them on social media websites like Twitter and Facebook. Take the time to build relationships and help them with problems they are having which are related to your area of expertise.

* Join question and answer sites, like Yahoo! Answers, and answer questions related to your niche.

* Write an ebook that answers the most pressing problems or common questions people have about your niche and distribute it for free.

* Obtain and display testimonials from satisfied clients on your website.

* Be seen with other industry leaders and have them talk about you with their following. Guest posting on popular blogs in your niche is a good way to get your foot in the door with many top names in your area of expertise.

Authority Marketing is not a get rich quick scheme. It takes time to build a reputation for yourself. There are things you can do to speed up the process. However, I can assure you that it will not happen overnight. It may take several months to a year of active promotion before you will see results. If you can make it, though, you will have an internet marketing strategy that you can bank on for the rest of your life. Good luck!
