How to Optimize Your Web Site Blog

Blogging is a great way to meet other people and make a few dollars. However, if you have been blogging for any length of time you may find that your blog has accumulated a lot of digital clutter. Here are a few things you can do to optimize your web site to maximize visitor enjoyment and interaction.

On the majority of blogs, it is the sidebar that gets the most cluttered. Many bloggers give into the temptation to fill the space with loads of gadgets, buttons and badges. However, this can cause your site to load slowly especially for those visitors who are stuck with dial up internet service. Spring clean your blog by emptying your sidebar and only put back those things that are essential. Move everything else to a separate page and put a link to it in the sidebar.

Another way to optimize your website is to install the most current version of your blog’s software. Developers often add more functionality to newer versions that negate the need for some of the plugins you may be using. You will also protect your website from hackers as most of them prey on blogs that are using outdated software. Delete any plugins or addons that you are no longer using or which have become obsolete.

Go through your posts and update or remove dead links. If you have a lot of posts, then use a tool like Website Goodies or W3C Link Checker to sniff out broken links. Optimize your web site posts by revising them to add new or revised information. If your writing skills have improved rewrite them completely so that they read better. Look for ways to link to old posts, such as writing new related posts, so new readers can enjoy things you’ve written in the past.

Optimize your web site for the search engines. Research relevant keywords for the subject matter of your site and modify posts and titles to include them. Make the post tags and categories more search engine friendly by reorganizing and renaming them with the keywords.

A sad and unfortunate fact is that many bloggers burn out within the first year of starting their blog. This means you may still be linked to bloggers who have taken down their websites. Spring clean your web site blogroll by weeding out the dead links and adding your new favorites.

It is good to try and optimize your web site at least once a year. You’ll be amazed at how much more efficient and pleasant your blog will be. You will enjoy blogging more and your visitors will thank you for a better reading experience.
